about

Mardi Gras After You're Gone is a song about waking up on Mardi Gras with a heavy heart of loss, and the transformative power of the day.

If Ever I Cease To Love is our Mardi Gras EP, with tracks Be Bayou and Mardi gras After You're Gone. When paired together these tracks highlight the interesting duality to carnival season. It’s a wonderful time of celebration, with moments of pause and reverence. Be Bayou is a joyful parade song. Mardi Gras After Your Gone is the other side of that coin. Mardi Gras and the season leading up to it is a marking of time for many New Orleanians, and that can inspire reflection and recognition for what we’ve lost as we begin a new year. Both of these feelings are alive and well on Mardi Gras Day.

lyrics

Like a child I wake up wild throwing off the sheets, put on my lashes, fill up the flask, and take to the streets. It’s a day of being balance between new adventures and trusted routines but somethings ain’t right and I know it despite all of this revelry. never before have I needed it more. A festival of relief. Deep in my bones my body it knows it’s Mardi Gras after you’re gone.

Out on these streets were miracles meet at every hour of this day. I keep thinking I’ll turn the corner run into your smiling face. it doesn’t belong to any of us. but it felt like it did to me. times they change and parties get stranger later in the evening. I can still grin despite all this sequins but my heart is heavy within. I knew it would come, all along it’s Mardi Gras after you’re gone.

We followed St. Anne quick as you can, we’ve got somewhere to be. The river it calls, and everyone knows I’m bringing your ashes with me. we stood by her water side so many years before. you’d always step in and this time again you join the water once more. I thought that I would never survive but this day proved me wrong. I am still here, loving you dear, it’s Mardi Gras after you’ve gone.
